The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration upholds that one in nine traffic deaths that occurred in 2007 were caused by a crash involved a large truck.
Across the United States, in 2007 more than 410,000 large trucks were in crashes. Nearly 5,000 ended in death, and more than 100,000 injuries were reported.
In Michigan alone, an alarming number of large-truck accidents took place, as follows:
- 114 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes
- 123 deaths resulted from crashes involving large trucks
- 4,511 large trucks were involved in injury crashes
- 1,202 injuries resulted from crashes involving large trucks
- 3,621 trucks were in crashes requiring a vehicle to be towed away
- 199 trucks bearing hazardous materials labels were in crashes
