What To Do If A Motorcycle Accident Is About To Happen
Obviously, avoiding the motorcycle accident altogether is the best thing.
You can help avoid Michigan motorcycle accidents by:
- Riding defensively – never assume that the other drivers see you; assume that you are invisible and that they will turn in front of you or merge into you
- Modifying your motorcycle to be more visible to automobile drivers
- Adding additional lighting
- Adding a headlight modulator – pulses the headlight to attract attention, preventing drivers from turning in front of you
- Adding brake light flashers – pulses the brake light to attract extra attention when slowing/stopping, preventing rear-end crashes
If a motorcycle accident cannot be avoided, take appropriate action to help lessen the impact and hopefully minimize injuries by:
- Apply maximum braking and attempt to steer away from the danger, but be careful that you aren’t heading for something worse (these skills should be practiced regularly in an empty parking lot or other open area)
- Maximum braking is the most effective method to reduce speed before impact and maintain control
- You should never intentionally “lay it down” to avoid an accident – you hit the ground sooner, faster, and lose all control
- If you “lay it down,” you will likely still hit what you were trying to avoid, and at a higher speed, since the hard parts of your bike won’t slow you nearly as much as the tires and brakes that are made to stop you
- The only exception is if this would allow you to make it under an obstruction rather than hitting it, such as a semi-truck trailer across the road
- If the back end does start to slide out (low-side) unintentionally during braking, it is best to take it the rest of the way down – unless you catch the slide very early and are still nearly straight and vertical
- If you suddenly let of the back brake as the bike starts to fall into a low-side slide, the back tire will suddenly grab, usually resulting in much more dangerous high-side crash – throwing you and the bike into the air, many times with the bike landing on top of the rider
- Wearing the right safety equipment can help prevent or lessen injuries in a crash
- Helmet – full-face is best
- Jacket – preferably leather
- Pants – preferably leather, but jeans at a minimum
- Boots
- Gloves
- Eye protection
